About Jared Dubro

Jared Dubro has been in a coma since April 5. Jared is a 25 year old doctoral student at the Adler School of Psychology in Chicago. He had a massive stroke on April 5, caused by an accumulation of fluid in the brain, a condition called hydrocephalus.

We are confident that with your help, and using a method called “coma stimulation”, we are going to get Jared to wake up from the coma, and with intensive therapy, resume his life again.

Studies have shown that talking to coma patients and playing music to coma patients are very effective.  Having a variety of visitors provides different voices and different personalities, we hope will encourage Jared to wake up from his coma.

Thank you so much for volunteering to help bring Jared back to consciousness!

We are asking volunteers to help in one of two ways
1. Auditory stimulation
2. Touch stimulation

Instructions on these types of stimulation are below.

Auditory stimulation:

  • When you meet Jared, identify yourself.
  • Talk slowly and in a normal tone of voice.
  • Keep sentences short and give Jared extra time to think about what you have said.
  • Tell Jared the date, time, place and reason for your visit.
  • Explain to Jared what you are going to talk about or do.
  • Only one person should speak at a time.
  • You should talk about any topic that interests you - news, sports, television program, book you are reading, Torah, the weather.  Whatever you want to talk about.
  • You can read to Jared from the newspaper, a magazine, or a book.
  • Avoid stimulation that evokes a startled response. This type of stimulation is counterproductive.

Motion stimulation:

This section is a work in progress. We will provide a video of range of motion exercises.
Basically, range of motion exercises are done on the joints, to flex and and stretch the joints and get the circulation going.
It also helps to prevent the muscles from getting atrophied.

If Jared is in a rocking chair, it is good to rock him.

Do not raise and lower the bed.
