ASC Pastoral Care Community
Washington, DC

Welcome to All Soul's Church Unitarian DC's pastoral care network web site. This site provides a place for congregants to request help as well as for volunteers to offer help and lend a hand. There are many ways each of us can help, including reaching out to someone on the phone following a significant life event, reading to someone who is visually-impaired and appreciates a visitor, preparing a meal for a family in need of community support, or becoming a 1:1 friend.

Rev. Susan Newman, the minister in charge of pastoral care, would like to hear from you, with permission from the person you are helping, if she or Rob are needed or any significant changes in their needs.

Your help is most appreciated and we look forward to expanding this network over time.

DC Dāna Village Practice the Buddhist value of dāna (generosity) through serving others Washington, DC

DC Dāna Village
Washington, DC

The DC Dāna Village aims to be an organization of volunteers that practice the Buddhist value of dāna (generosity) through serving others.

“Without abandoning these five qualities, one is incapable of entering & remaining in the first jhana… second jhana… the third jhana… the fourth jhana; incapable of realizing the fruit of stream-entry… the fruit of oncereturning… the fruit of non-returning… arahantship. Which five? Stinginess as to one’s monastery [lodgings] … one’s family [of supporters]… one’s gains… one’s status, and stinginess as to the Dhamma.” — AN 5:256-257

“If beings knew, as I know, the results of giving and sharing, they would not eat without have given, nor would the stain of miserliness overcome their minds. Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared, if there were someone to receive their gift. But because beings do not know, as I know, the results of giving and sharing, they eat without have given. The stain of miserliness overcomes their minds.” — Iti 26

Welcome to our Lotsa Helping Hands Community web site. We know many people have asked for a way to help and relieving them of the responsibility to cook and shop for dinner is one way. Please pick a date and describe what you are making and delivering to them. A cooler should be outside the door where you can leave the dinner. Dinner for 2 or 4 people would be greatly appreciated. I will inform the community when the family no longer needs this support. Messages are always welcome, but we have arranged this so that the family can have their privacy as they try to cope with their terrible loss.

"Love is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself." -- RW Emerson

Please know how much we appreciate you.

We're hoping this tool will make it easy for those who have offered to provide help to the Domorad family because mama (Ann) has breast cancer.  Check out Help 101 for an intro.  See Ann Specifics if you want more detail.  The calendar has tasks we can use help with so far.

At this time, there are kid transport and family meals on the site. Other things that might appear are taking Ann to/from chemo; attending doctor appointments and taking notes; making food for the Domorad clan, and if Ann is too nauseous, making some items just for her; oddball shopping.

The Domorads are starting to use this site as a place to organize appointments and "Honey-Dos" for Robert - but they'll just self assign such tasks.

THANK YOUS

There are too many souls to thank.  So many are vividly demonstrating their kindness and generosity, but we will include here a special thanks to Alicia Pedone for managing this site, to Ann's sister Sally for being with her after the BMX and managing her;), and especially to Robert who is in this burdensome position of being a rock when he is not even on native soil.

McCann Family
Rockville, MD

Dear Friends of the McCann Family:

I write to share deeply sad news.

Last night, on December 13th, Peg, Clare and Ciaran lost their husband and father, Gerry, after a grueling journey battling an unexpected illness over the past three months.

Although our sentiments and support cannot possibly ease the McCann family's pain, we hope they can be a source of strength in the very difficult days ahead.

Final information regarding funeral services is forthcoming. We will update you with that information when it becomes available.

We will also share information in the near future about how individuals can best be of support to the McCann family. For now, I know that you all join me in holding Clare, Ciaran and Peg, as well as the rest of Gerry's family, in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Callie

Thank you for checking out Annmarie's Helping Hands website! This site provides a place for family and friends to sign up to prepare and deliver meals to the house once Mom is discharged. That way, we will know what nights a meal is coming so we don't cook/order in. Thank you for your support in helping mom rest, relax and heal.

There will also be a few mornings/afternoons for babysitting as Becky starts back to work, has OB appointments, etc.... This way, we won't need to depend on mom to watch Bennett until she's back at 100%.

Shirat HaNefesh Chesed Committee
Silver Spring, MD

Welcome ...

... to the SHN Lotsa Helping Hands Chesed Committee web site.

Much informal assistance takes place within our community, which is only one aspect of what makes SHN so special. We hope to develop a culture where every SHN member can feel comfortable asking for help from the Chesed Committee. When a need is expressed, Loretta will email all volunteers. Sometimes Rabbi Gilah or Hazzan Tasat will let us know that someone would like our assistance. Anyone who has joined this on-line community can then go to the calendar to sign up for a particular task. Some examples of what volunteers might be asked to sign up for include: providing rides to/from medical appointments or SHN services; bringing meals during a shiva period, after surgery, after a baby is born, or during an extended illness; or visiting and calling a homebound member.

We also hope that our volunteers will let our clergy know when there is someone in our community who needs assistance but doesn't feel comfortable asking for it.

Members can ask for assistance through this website, as well as by contacting our clergy or Loretta.

Thanks for supporting Shirat HaNefesh as a member of our Chesed Committee.

Love for the Hatchers
Towson, MD

As most of you have come to know and love the Hatcher family, you may have noticed that they are an extraordinary group of people who are incredibly selfless and giving under any circumstance. They are a phenomenal family who has encountered a lot of challenges that have only brought them closer and made them stronger. They are definitely not the type of family who would ever ask for help.

So let's not ask, let's just do it! Please feel free to sign up to bring over a meal to them, and invite others to do so too!

Please note that Laura and Simon have significant food allergies: including peanuts, tree nuts, (better to avoid ALL nuts) legumes (better to avoid all legumes/peas/beans), melons, soy, soybeans (but soy sauce, soybean oil, and soy lethicin are fine). Please make sure you double check labels and make sure that there is nothing that is labeled food protein, modified food starch, etc. as most of those are usually soy.

If you have concerns about what you would like to make them, please let us know!

Foreign Student Helping Hands Support for Foreign Students in Metro DC Arlington, VA
community photo

Foreign Student Helping Hands
Arlington, VA

Welcome to our Lotsa Helping Hands Community web site. Foreign Student Helping Hands (FSHH) is a community of support for foreign students studying in the Metro DC area. ***

We provide all types of help, from meals to transportation to tutoring and more. It is a place for people in our area to go to request help as well as for volunteers to offer help and lend a hand. ***

Many foreign students experience "culture shock" when they first arrive to study in the U.S. Many students arrive and have no local family or friends to make them feel welcome. If you are a foreign student and would like help to "settle in," we encourage you to participate here and let us know how we can help. Anyone who wishes to help is welcome to join our community as a supporter. ***

The needs of foreign students vary. Many are here with very little financial support and resources. There are many ways to help our financially-challenged students. Supporters can provide meals and transportation... donate books... even donate frequent flyer miles so students can return to their home countries during breaks to visit their families. ***

Other foreign students have the financial resources they need, but find that it difficult to integrate socially. This website is also a place to provide social and emotional support to help our guests feel at home. ***

We hope you will explore this site. Students - please don't be shy to ask for help. Supporters - thank you for your generous contributions! ***

Welcome,
FSHH Coordinators

Pat's Place
Falls Church, VA

Welcome to Pat's Place. This is meant to be a place to find information, show support and generally be of whatever help the Shand's need.

We all need to remember that this is their journey, and theirs to share as they wish. We must respect that it may be hard to keep everyone updated on "the latest news" but we are hoping that by having this site we can take the burden off of them and let them be together as a family without the interruption of all of us "who mean well" and "want to help" but may not know how.  By using this site the Shands can share information, request help, and we can send messages of love and support.

Most of all, let's keep each member of the family in our daily thoughts and prayers.

“Too often we under estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”

Friends of Ed
Herndon, VA

Ed Moritz, Kimo's step father who has lived with us since 2010 has struggled since last November to recover from a series of serious bacterial infections - one of which went to the lining of his heart. He has spent nearly 3 full months in Fair Oaks, Reston and Georgetown hospitals.

Throughout the course of the treatment, Ed has maintained a positive attitude even amidst the challenges of the infections, a heart attack, a serious fall where he broke his neck, his nose and his front teeth. All of this has resulted in severe weakness and frailty, including his now being bedridden.

When medical treatment and rehabilitation were no longer viable options, he agreed with the doctors that it was time to come home to the comforts of home, limited medical treatment and loving family care.

As we've settled into our routine, we see that we can benefit from a little support. Many of our friends and family have offered to help and so we've put this calendar together for you to consider ways to help. We also want to keep you updated on Ed's status.

Thank you everyone for your love, prayers, kindness and support. We appreciate all you are doing to support us in every way.
